ALSORTS - A Sexuality Awareness ResourceFor young Australians, sexuality is a significant issue affecting their mental health and well being. A national report on same-sex attracted young people reveals that large numbers of young people report difficulties linked to their sexual orientation. It is well documented that young people who experience same-sex attraction and alternate gender identity are at greater risk of being victimised, suffering from mental depression and abusing alcohol and drugs. They sometimes face family conflict and rejection at the time of disclosure of their sexual identity. A high percentage of young people who attempt suicide are gay, lesbian, bisexual or struggling with their sexuality in an environment that supports intolerance. It is especially important for their health and well being that gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender and intersex (GLBTI) young people are supported and have access to appropriate resources and services. ALSORTS: A Sexuality Awareness Resource contains a wealth of information for GLBTI young people covering such topics as sexuality and gender, common myths, homophobia, family, disability, religion, health (physical and mental) and the law. It also lists a huge range of resource material to support GLBTI youth in understanding these issues including books, videos, Internet sites, newspapers, as well as community listings of supportive groups and organisations and their contact details. This information will help to break down the feelings of isolation and depression that many GLBTI young people face as they struggle with their Sexual identity and expression is embedded in individual health and well being and although coming out may not solve all the issues for GLBTI youth, ALSORTS is an excellent resource to support them through this process. It is also an attempt to avoid the known risks of not being able to come to terms with one’s own sexual identity, such as feelings of isolation and depression, lacking support in dealing with violence and discrimination, homelessness and drug and alcohol abuse. Hopefully this resource enables GLBTI young people to access and connect (either directly or indirectly) with supportive and understanding networks and services that support them in dealing with a range of issues they may face in their local community.
