  • An education road-show detailing 85 Federal law reforms which aim to end discrimination against Australian same-sex couples is st to hit Victoria in early June. The Wear It With Pride campaign is being rolled out across the country to educate the gay and lesbian community on what the changes to the laws will mean to them.

All Constance wanted was to attend the Prom with her partner of choice and dress in clothes that reflect who she feels she is. Seems straight forward basic human rights 101.

  • The {also} Foundation with partners TGV (TransGender Victoria), VGLRL (Victorian Gay & Lesbian Rights Lobby) and AVP (Anti Violence Project) are pleased to announce the commencement of the first stage of; “Developing a community education and awareness strategy to reduce homophobic harassment in Victoria”.

  • {also} Foundation CEO, Lyn Morgain has signalled a mixed response to proposed changes to equal opportunity laws following an announcement by Attorney-General Rob Hulls on the weekend. Ms Morgain said the proposal is welcome insofar as it will make it more difficult for religious organisations to discriminate on various grounds, including sexual orientation and gender identity.

  • Victoria’s sentencing laws will be amended to explicitly recognise the significant damage that crimes motivated by hate cause victims and the wider community, Deputy Premier and Attorney-General Rob Hulls said today. The Sentencing Amendment Bill 2009, to be introduced to Parliament today, implements fully the Sentencing Advisory Council’s recommendations on crimes motivated by hatred or prejudice.

  • The {also} Board has reluctantly accepted the resignation of Lyn Morgain as the CEO of the {also} Foundation, and Care and Benevolent Society.Lyn has decided after a number of years at the helm of {also} to pursue other opportunities. She leaves behind a greatly energised organisation with bright horizons and a valued reputation.

  • State Trustees have been associated with {also} for a number of years, in particular providing support for the annual Rainbow Seniors Tea Dance as a part of the Victorian Seniors Festival. This year, {also} and State Trustees have formalised their involvement and signed a partnership agreement that brings some exciting benefits to the GLBTIQ community as well as members of {also}.

    IDAHO acknowledges the day when the World Health Organisation decided to no longer think of Homosexuality as an illness. Socially it was a very important moment for queer folk around the globe and these days we use it as a day to acknowledge that many of us still experience a very high level of harassment and violence and in some cases assault. What I know is a lot of people in mainstream community tell me that they are surprised that that's our experience but most queer folk I know say yeah that's what happens every day.

  • Altona Ward Councillor Tony Briffa has been awarded the 2008 McArthur Management Services Local Government Fellowship. The fellowship provides one Victorian Councillor with a $10,000 international study grant to undertake research on a significant issue affecting local government.

  • First ever statement on sexual orientation and gender identity at the UN General Assembly

  • As the world celebrates the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), the UN General Assembly will hear a statement in mid-December endorsed by more than 50 countries across the globe calling for an end to rights abuses based on sexual orientation and gender identity.

  • The Same-Sex Relationships (Equal Treatment in Commonwealth Laws General Law Reform) Act 2008 is passed.

  • On Dec 4 2008 the Victorian Parliament passed the Assisted Reproductive Treatment Bill.

  • The inaugural{For All Of Us} ALSO Awards for the GLBTIQ (gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender intersex & queer) community were held at CQ Function Centre on the 24th November 2008.

  • On May 23rd 2008, {also} moved to new premises at City Village, Level 8, 225 Bourke St Melbourne. After two years of living with the wonderful folk at VAC, we packed everything up and moved to our new offices in the heart of Melbourne's CBD.
