Take Care Out There

Individual health and wellbeing through stronger community endeavors.

The most recent Australian figures show that the rates of HIV transmission continue to rise across the country, however after the rate of HIV diagnosis in Victoria increased from 3.9 per 100 000 population in 2000 to around 5.5 in 2006, it has now declined to 5.2 in 2009 - (University of NSW Centre in HIV Epidemiology and Clinical Research 2010).

Commissioned by the Victorian Department of Health, this project was one of several that were granted three years of funding by the Department, all of which are taking new approaches to sexual health promotion across the State and began in early 2009.

'Take care {out} there' aims to empower individuals to take responsibility for their own sexual health by engaging directly with the community groups in which they are a part.

This project engages with groups in the gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, intersex and queer communities, identifies leaders within those sectors and provides them with the necessary resources to prevent the of transmission of HIV and sexually transmitted infections.

Through the development of resources, provision of events, communication of sexual positivity and a re-connection to the ownership of safer sexual practices, the longevity and resilience of the queer community can be sustained.
